Meet Bettie, a beautiful long-haired tuxedo with yellow-green eyes and a gentle soul that matches her sweet face. Bettie was abandoned amongst a feral colony and when we realized she was dragging her left rear foot and had a wound in her left flank, we brought her in so she could get the medical care she needed. The veterinarian concluded that feral cats had attacked her and treated the wound on her flank as a bite.
After a few weeks in foster care, Bettie was still not using her back leg, so we brought her to the vet. The results of the x-ray and neurological exam showed that Bettie had been shot and the BB had lodged inside her spinal canal, resulting in tail paralysis and a weakness in her rear left leg that causes her to drag her rear paw. In May, Bettie had surgery to remove the BB from her spine and her use of her leg has been improving, but the leg still drags occasionally and her tail is still paralyzed.
Bettie, despite going through some hard times in her first year of life, is one of the sweetest and most affectionate kitties and all the CARE volunteers who have met her have fallen in love with her! She is very vocal when she wants some loving and cuddles and has the cutest meow. She loves neck scratches the most, and will lay right next to you with the loudest purrs. Even though she is sweet, she also has her spunky side. She loves to run and jump and play with her toys. Despite her injury Bettie still gets around quickly, and it does not seem to affect her quality of life at all. She is still a happy, sweet little girl.
Bettie needs a special adopter who will be willing to give her a little extra help and provide some home adjustments for her. She has an easy routine of PT we do to help her regain muscle and use in that leg/foot, and her adopter will need to be willing to continue with this routine with guidance from CARE. Because of her dragging leg, she will need a one-story, carpeted home or a baby gate to keep her away from stairs. She uses the litterbox perfectly.
